How to Identify and Manage a Mouse Infestation

Any mouse can carry pathogens that may cause disease and can damage aspects in the home, such as wiring and insulation. Read on to learn how to tell if you have mice in your house. And learn how to manage a potential problem.

5 Common Signs of Mice Infestation

How do you know you have a mouse infestation? The easiest way to know if you have mice in your home is to actually see them running around. However, mice are nocturnal and tend to shy away from humans, so this can be a fairly difficult task. With that said, there are several signs that mice have moved into your home. Here are a few key indicators that you may have a mice infestation:

  1. Mouse droppings or urine.
  2. Nests made of paper, insulation, fabrics or other materials they can find inside.
  3. Insulation that has been disturbed.
  4. Ducts that have been chewed or gnawed.
  5. Night sounds that include gnawing, squeaking, scampering or scurrying.

Of course, other rodents or animals could be responsible for droppings, sounds or nests, too. So to know for certain you have a mice problem, schedule an inspection with EEC today. We can help you get to the bottom of your problem.

What Diseases Do Mice Carry?

Mice do not actually carry diseases. However, they carry pathogens that can cause disease in humans. And you do not have to be bitten by a mouse to become infected. Something as simple as handling a dead mouse or breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine or droppings is enough to put you at risk at contracting certain rodent-transmitted diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

How to Treat a Mouse Infestation

How many mice are actually considered an infestation? Unfortunately, if you see one mouse in your home, then there may be more in the walls or attic. Traps and other DIY methods can be effective to an extent. However, they can also be dangerous and/or ineffective without the help and knowledge of a professional on the scene. A trained mice exterminator can assess the rodents in your home and work with you to customize a treatment and prevention plan. In the long run, working with a professional can save you time and stress.

How to Help Prevent a Mouse Infestation

Here are some steps you can take to help reduce the chances of mice in your house.

  • Eliminate all food sources by keeping up a tidy home. Vacuum the home regularly and wipe crumbs and residue off of counters.
  • Store all food in glass jars and airtight containers. Secure all indoor and outdoor trash cans.
  • Periodically walk the perimeter of your home and check for holes, since they may be entrances for mice to enter.
  • Plug any holes with wire mesh or quick-drying cement. Mice can chew through caulk and other rubber or plastic fillers, so they’re generally not effective.
  • Keep flowers, shrubs, vines, tree branches and other vegetation trimmed at least 18 inches away from your home. This helps to eliminate bridges to your house.
  • Maintain a clean yard by picking up any fallen fruit, cleaning out your summer vegetable garden after it’s gone to seed and making sure to keep debris piles far from structures and your home.
  • Inspect the roof and seams between roofing and siding or brick. You may need to call a professional to handle this aspect.
